Uploading increases Library Size

Hi,

I had some trouble with the Photos App (stuck on uploading, consuming 100% CPU), so I decided to disable and re-enable iCloud Photo Library. At this point things got even stranger:

* I suddenly told me that the library wouldn't fit on the disk and I had to choose optimize storage

* It does not seem to reupload everything, but matches the remote library, which is ok

* However, I have about 39k Images with approx 250GB in size. After running for 3-4 days now, it tells me, it is uploading 46k items and is through 147GB of 455GB. Meanwhile the library has increased to 315GB...

Can anyone tell me what is going on there? Even if it's strange and takes forever, I hope it does not screw the library?

That is normal. Your library has already been in iCloud and if you download this library to your Mac, Photos will want to ensure that the combined size of the library in iCloud and the library on your Mac will fit on the drive.

The size of the library can increase during the downloading from iCloud; during the merging Photos may need additional working storage.

Does the library size still keep increasing?

No, it seems to stay at 315GB. But it also does not seem to download and merge, as a have no downstream traffic. Also, it does not state something like e.g downloading 39k items / uploading 39k images (assuming that they're the same and it just checks if it is the case). It's quite confusing that it says uploading 46k images.

In the meantime I switched back to download originals and it didn't yet complain about disk space.

It's a bit annoying that this process takes forever and uses all my CPU, but the main concern for me is, that it does not screw up my library. I really wished Apple would have been a bit more precise with it's status output...

That should be o.k. I did the same without any ill effects.
